Dani Rodrik is the 2020 recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences

The Science Academy Turkey member Prof. Dani Rodrik is this year’s recipient of the Princess of Asturias Social Sciences Award.

According to the jury, Rodrik, 62, “has strengthened the rigor in the analysis of the dynamics of the globalization of international economic relations” and his conclusions have made the economic system “much more sensitive to the needs of society.”

IHRNASS Statement on Human Rights Concerns related to COVID-19

The International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies (IHRNASS) has issued a statement on human rights concerns related to Covid-19. (May 19, 2020)

Science Academy Turkey- Bilim Akademisi, strongly endorses this important statement as the rights to life and health care rely on the freedom of expression and freedom of information based on evidence. The inclusion of all in the protection of these rights, especially those forced into risk by necessity and by law, is a practical as well as a moral obligation.

Erol Gelenbe among IFIP’s first cohort of fellows

Philip W. Anderson (1923 – 2020)

EAS Honors Martin Rees with Fritz Zwicky Prize for Astrophysics & Cosmology

On behalf of the Fritz Zwicky Foundation in Glarus, Switzerland, the European Astronomical Society (EAS) has introduced the Fritz Zwicky Prize for Astrophysics & Cosmology to honor scientists who have obtained fundamental and outstanding results in these fields.

The Inaugural Fritz Zwicky Prize goes to honorary Bilim Akademisi member Prof. Martin J. Rees (University of Cambridge, United Kingdom) for outstanding contributions to astrophysics and cosmology including seminal papers on active galaxies and black holes, the origin of gamma-ray bursts, the large-scale structure of the universe, and the cosmic microwave background.

The Science Academy, Turkey admitted as a Member Organization of the International Science Council

The Science Academy, Turkey – Bilim Akademisi has just been admitted as a Member Organization of the International Science Council (ISC), which is the largest global organization of science and social science institutions, comprising a membership of 40 international Unions and Associations and more than 140 national and regional organizations including Academies and Research Councils.

The Science Academy intends to be an active Member Organization of the ISC based on the expert contributions of our members.

Mehmet Toner Elected as member of National Academy of Medicine

The Science Academy, Turkey  member Prof. Mehmet Toner has been elected to the rank of member by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).

Election to the National Academy of Medicine is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Prof. Dr. Toner is a member of many national and international professional committees, and serves on the editorial board of many scientific journals including Cryobiology, Cryo-Letters, Cell Preservation Technology, Annual Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, and Nanomedicine.
