Philip W. Anderson (1923 – 2020)

Anderson, Nobel Prize Laureate 1977, Joseph Henry Professor of Physics Emeritus at Princeton University, passed away on Sunday March 29 at age 96. EAS Honors Martin Rees with Fritz Zwicky Prize for Astrophysics & Cosmology

On behalf of the Fritz Zwicky Foundation in Glarus, Switzerland, the European Astronomical Society (EAS) has introduced the Fritz Zwicky Prize for Astrophysics & Cosmology to honor scientists who have obtained fundamental and outstanding results in these fields.

The Inaugural Fritz Zwicky Prize goes to honorary Bilim Akademisi member Prof. Martin J. Rees (University of Cambridge, United Kingdom) for outstanding contributions to astrophysics and cosmology including seminal papers on active galaxies and black holes, the origin of gamma-ray bursts, the large-scale structure of the universe, and the cosmic microwave background.

The Science Academy, Turkey admitted as a Member Organization of the International Science Council

The Science Academy, Turkey – Bilim Akademisi has just been admitted as a Member Organization of the International Science Council (ISC), which is the largest global organization of science and social science institutions, comprising a membership of 40 international Unions and Associations and more than 140 national and regional organizations including Academies and Research Councils.

The Science Academy intends to be an active Member Organization of the ISC based on the expert contributions of our members.

Yeşim Atamer awarded degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa by University of Hamburg

On occasion of its centenary the University of Hamburg has awarded Yeşim M. Atamer, professor at İstanbul Bilgi University and Bern University Faculty of Law and member of Bilim Akademisi, (The Science Academy) the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (Dr. iur. h.c.).

Professor Atamer was also recently elected full member to the Academia Europaea.

Erol Gelenbe Awarded “Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mérite”

The Science Academy, Turkey – Bilim Akademisi member Prof.  Erol Gelenbe  has  been awarded “Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Mérite” (Commander of the National Order of Merit of France) by decree of President Emanuel Macron, dated 29th May 2019, for services to higher education and research. Prof. Gelenbe is one of only two academics who were recognised with this honour in 2019. The Order of Merit of France is a distinct honour from the “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur” that Erol received in 2014.

Zehra Sayers – New Honorary Member of the Science Academy

The 16th General Assembly of the Science Academy was held on April 6, 2019.

Prof. Zehra Sayers has been elected as Honorary Member.

Prof. Dr. Zehra Sayers is a molecular biophysicist working on structure-function relationships in biological molecules using synchrotron radiation X-rays. She is a founding member of the Genetics, Molecular Biology and Bioengineering programme at Sabanci University in Istanbul. She is also Director of the Foundations Development Programme at Sabanci University. Since 2002 Dr. Sayers has been the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of SESAME.
