The 16th General Assembly of the Science Academy was held on April 6, 2019.

Prof. Zehra Sayers has been elected as Honorary Member.

Prof. Dr. Zehra Sayers is a molecular biophysicist working on structure-function relationships in biological molecules using synchrotron radiation X-rays. She is a founding member of the Genetics, Molecular Biology and Bioengineering programme at Sabanci University in Istanbul. She is also Director of the Foundations Development Programme at Sabanci University. Since 2002 Dr. Sayers has been the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of SESAME.

The European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA),  the European University Association (EUA) and Science Europe issued a joint statement  on the urgent need to back commitments to academic freedom and university autonomy with solid actions.

In response to the latest actions taken by the Hungarian Ministry for Innovation and Technology concerning the allocation of funding to the research institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, ALLEA  reinforces its calls to protect the institutional autonomy and academic freedom of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
