The International Science Council (ISC) has announced the appointment of new members to three key advisory committees established for the 2025–2027 term. As part of this process, Hakan S. Orer, President of Science Academy, has been elected to the Committee for Freedom and Responsibility in Science, assuming an important representative role on behalf of Turkey.

According to the ISC’s announcement, the new committee members will begin their duties as of June 2025. Out of 70 candidates nominated by 47 institutions from different parts of the world, only 27 individuals were selected for committee membership. Mr. Orer was among these distinguished individuals.

In forming the committees, a variety of factors were considered, including diversity of expertise, geographic balance, scientific discipline variety, gender balance, and career stage. The Committee for Freedom and Responsibility in Science, in which Hakan S. Orer will serve, works to uphold the universal values of science, defend scientific freedoms, and ensure scientists’ responsibilities to society are respected.

Prof. Dr. Orer is a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology at Koç University School of Medicine. He also serves as a member of the Bioethics Monitoring Group of the UNESCO Turkey National Commission, and as President of Science Academy, he plays an active role in Turkey’s national and international scientific policy initiatives.

With this significant appointment, Science Academy President Hakan S. Orer will contribute to the ISC’s global efforts in the area of scientific freedom and responsibility and will also help enhance the visibility and influence of Turkey in the international scientific community.
