BAGEP-2013

Created in the first year following the establishment of Science Academy, BAGEP started out with 20 awards in 2013. The first year’s awards were funded by Science Academy, a donator, Mehveş Demiren, Eczacıbaşı Holding, ELIG Law Office, Kadir Has Foundation, Ahmet Oral (SA member), Şevket Pamuk (SA member) and Vehbi Koç Foundation.

348 young researchers from 101 institutions applied for the awards of 2013. The candidates had to be born in 1973 or younger, and to hold a PhD or medical specialist degree. The candidates were assessed in 3 categories, namely Natural Science, Mathematics and Engineering; Social Sciences and Humanities; Medical, Life and Health Sciences. The candidates’ applications, including their curricula vitae and the studies they intended to conduct, were evaluated by branch committees, composed of Science Academy members in the related branch. As a result of the evaluation process, 20 young scientists were granted their awards at a ceremony held on April 21, 2013 at Boğaziçi University. These young scientists will be supported in their research with a scholarship of 10,000 TL per year for two years.

A large majority of the applications for BAGEP 2013 were seen to hold very high scientific value. It should be indicated that at least 50 candidates presented applications worthy of award. The applications of those candidates who could not be granted an award this year will be reevaluated next year.

The number and the advanced scientific level of the award applications for 2013 suggest that BAGEP is reaching success, and strengthen our optimism that science will make further progress in Turkey. We have started to expend efforts to grant a higher number of BAGEP awards in the year 2014.
